Great Atlantic Trading Inc. began as Great Atlantic Seafood Company in 1991, when husband and wife commercial ocean divers and caterers, Dana & Denise Leavitt, opened up a scallop, clam, muscle and sea urchin processing facility on the wharfs of Portland, Maine. Even from those very early days, Great Atlantic as a seafood production company was exporting New England seafood to a number of countries across both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. As partnerships were formed with international companies looking for quality cold-water seafood specialties, other demands for fine cuisines and supplies of foreign ingredients began to present themselves as business opportunities.
Not long after sending their first shipment of American caviar to markets in Asia and Europe, Great Atlantic Trading was incorporated as a global fine foods distributor. By keeping close relationships with customers and soon-to-be suppliers from other nations, Great Atlantic's product offering became more diverse than ever, moving from solely seafood to specialties such as truffles, escargots, oils, vinegar and spices.
Nearly 30 years later, Great Atlantic still specializes in the import/export of the world's finest caviar and specialty food items, retaining many loyal customers served since the early days of incorporation. We have been in the industry a long time, surviving through the economic, political and regulatory changes that have brought ups and downs to the market.
